Mountains and Water are unclaimable to nations essentially while other terrains are, Terrain effects Gold production being a significant hit if you are full of Tundra/Deserts or Mountains such as Iceland, Norway , Algeria Ect. Crossings are claimable land not effecting size or gold merely land to enact wars via bordering Eg. Italy while not bordering Albania can attack Albania due to a nearby Crossing in the Adriatic Sea. Basic Terrain is the default terrain having no special effects and consists normally of most Land. Terrain can be edited either in the map creator or God mode, with a slider from 1-25 Pixels of any terrain, However Terrain with Cities cannot be changed unless the city is removed, other similar features are listed as All terrain must be built first on Basic land and cannot be placed on water, Crossings can only be placed on water, Any terrain can be placed with Basic land, cities cannot be placed on water (Obviously) or mountains.
